What’s new
What changed between Stone Mate versions, newest first.
Version 1.2.1
25 October 2026
What’s new
- Cut (Ctrl+X): same as Copy, then it removes the selection or clears the yellow slot. It is in the Edit menu and on right-click.
- With no selection, Copy and Cut take only the yellow slot, not the whole line.
- Paste into the yellow slot, without OCR: LaTeX becomes the graphical formula; other letters stay in the formula. An image still goes through OCR.
- An explicit selection goes into the structure: brackets wrap it, a power puts it in the base, a fraction puts it in the numerator, a system puts it in the first equation.
- In a system, Enter moves to the equation below; on the last one it adds another. New, on a system equation, adds an equation. Delete on an empty equation removes it when at least two remain.
- In Draw you can delete the selected point, even if it has a value. The program asks you to confirm.
- On a segment or a vector, Clear empties the label. If it is already empty, it deletes the stroke and its points.
Improvements
- Line and vector labels are larger, in capitals, at the middle of the stroke, parallel to it and above the line, with no background.
- The vector arrowhead is a little larger, and the stroke keeps an even thickness.
- Undoing a line or a vector does not reopen the first endpoint.
- Dragging to select a formula starts at the right place, including from an empty slot in a fraction.
Fixes
- Repeated Ctrl+Z on a formula no longer closes the program.
- Undo still works when a drawing state cannot be read.
- A point left on its own, with no curve or segment, can be removed.
- A fraction’s axis stays aligned.
Removed
- None.
Version 1.2
22 October 2026
What’s new
- Vector tool: two clicks, a segment with an arrowhead, and a label, as for a segment.
- Select tool instead of Move: drag points, segments, vectors, and whole curves.
- Line can start and finish on a point that is already there, including a point from another segment. A short click does this. A long click, or a drag, moves a finished figure.
- Until the second endpoint is chosen, clicks finish the line or the vector and do not select anything else.
- Clicking the active tool again (Point, Line, Vector, Curve) returns to Select.
- Shapes inserted from the icons are offset, so they do not stack.
- A bar above the plane: Value or the segment or vector label on the left, drawing Undo and Redo on the right, with no “History” title.
- With Draw open, Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y act on the drawing. Esc undoes the last gesture and, if there is nothing to undo, leaves Draw.
- Blue dots also appear for lines and vectors: with the axes, with each other, and with curves, including several points for the same pair. If you move the figure, the dots follow the crossing.
Improvements
- Clear on the drawing is named New drawing and still asks you to confirm. Clear remains on the sign chart.
- Undoing only the last stroke becomes undo and redo.
Fixes
- A line can join a shared point when you release, and the first click of Line can start from a vertex already drawn.
Removed
- No function was removed. Move, undo-last-stroke, and Clear on the drawing are replaced by the tools above. The automatic graph had already been removed in 1.1.
Version 1.1
17 October 2026
What’s new
- Interface in Italian, English, French, or Spanish, or following the computer language. If that language is not one of these, English is used. The choice is in Preferences and applies at the next start.
- English manual. Help opens the page in the browser: Italian when the interface is Italian, English in every other case, including French and Spanish.
- In Draw, a freehand Curve. The program recognizes the closest school shape — line, parabola, circle, ellipse, rectangle, square, sine, cosine, exponential, logarithm, hyperbola, absolute value, cubic — and redraws it cleanly, without writing the equation. If it does not recognize the stroke, the freehand mark stays.
- Icons to insert those ready-made shapes; you then move the points.
- A numeric value on a point, for example −1, and blue dots at intersections with the axes and between curves, which you can label.
- You can delete the selected curve.
- Ctrl, Alt, and Shift shortcuts can be changed in Settings. If two commands use the same keys, the program warns you. Formula keys (/, ^, …) stay fixed.
- Absolute value also with Ctrl+|. The button was already in 1.0.
Improvements
- The Graph panel is for opening GeoGebra and importing a PNG or a
.ggb. After import the panel closes. - In the sign chart, columns sit on the axis. Filled and empty dots go at the row-by-column crossings, no longer as two separate column buttons on the axis. Plus and minus signs are written by hand.
- The * key inserts the multiplication dot ·. In 1.0 it inserted ×.
- In English the text buttons are B, I, and U. In Italian they stay G, C, and S.
- Select all on the active line works on a formula as well as on text.
- The Edit menu shows the shortcuts for delete line and move line.
Fixes
- Enter on a formula no longer asks whether to duplicate, insert an empty line, or cancel. Enter adds an empty line; Ctrl+D copies the line.
- The strike-through button shows the □̸ mark.
- In English the bold tooltip reads Bold (Ctrl+B).
Removed
-
Automatic graph from an expression. In 1.0 you typed
x^2,sin(x),2x+1— or used From line — and Draw plotted y = f(x). From 17 October 2026 that panel is gone. Stone Mate writes the mathematics, it does not solve it. It does not calculate or plot y = f(x) for the person writing. Drawing is by hand. - A file already saved with that kind of graph, and no imported image, still shows it on the sheet. Export still draws it too.
Version 1.0
October 2026
Main functions
Stone Mate is a notebook for writing mathematics on an A4-style sheet. A new piece of work asks for first name, last name, and title, and opens full screen. The first time it also shows About (version, contacts, license, link to the site); after that the window is under Help.
You can:
- write formulas with an Italian keyboard and the tabs Base, Greek, Log, Trig, Analysis, Symbols, Logic, and Matrices: fractions, powers, subscripts, roots, brackets, systems, matrices, Greek letters, limits, sums, integrals, derivatives to write. The program does not calculate them;
- use the Most used row (Ctrl+1 … Ctrl+9) and absolute value from a button;
- strike through a term to show a simplification;
- copy and paste — a photo of a formula can be recognized — and drop an image on an empty line;
- write formatted text: bold, italic, underline, title, alignment, font;
- insert ready-made formulas (templates) and keep your own in the formula sheet;
- plot a graph by typing an expression (
x^2,sin(x),2x+1, …) and pressing Draw, or use the formula already on the sheet with From line; - open GeoGebra in the browser and import a PNG or a
.ggbonto the sheet; - draw points and segments by hand on a grid, then insert the drawing into the sheet;
- fill in a sign chart by hand. The program does not calculate the signs;
- recognize a formula from a photo, a PDF, or a rectangle on the screen, with a local helper (Ollama) that asks permission before a large download;
- save the work as
.smate, reopen it from recent documents, export to Word and PDF, and print; - zoom the sheet, show page breaks, and open the computer’s calculator;
- set character size, spacing between lines, and which buttons to show.
The 1.0 interface is Italian. The other languages arrive with 1.1.
Enter on a formula that already has content opens a choice: duplicate the line, insert an empty one, or cancel. The New button always creates an empty line. Duplicate is also Ctrl+D.
